How Does Rolfing Feel?
In Ida Rolf’s days, Rolfing was commonly associated with pain. However, Rolfers today are trained differently, and always work within or at the edge of a client’s comfort zone. Any discomfort should be temporary and associated with a feeling of relief. However, there is still significant variation in the depth of pressure Rolfers use.
For example, some Rolfers opt to work very lightly, preferring to use the clients’ awareness to evoke subtle change. For this reason, some people come away from Rolfing sessions quite surprised, and sometimes even disappointed. In my own practice in Austin TX, I find that Rolfing is most effective when it is deeper than massage — and often deeper than deep-tissue work, but applied in an intentful way that works with the client’s body, rather than against it.
I have dealt with chronic neck and head pain for years. I’ve used physical therapy and dry needling to treat those conditions but as I’ve aged the rest of my body has become chronically sore.
